In the past three years, because of the recession, many layoffs have taken place. With an all-time high unemployment rate, Calif. residents are finding it hard to secure jobs. Many are taking this time as an opportunity to go back to school and earn their degree. California has some of the top colleges in the nation, and even though it can be difficult to go back to school when older, many colleges in the state are trying their best to accommodate these students. Here is a list of the top three schools for reentry students in California. 1. Santa Rosa Junior College 1501 Mendocino Ave. Santa Rosa, CA Considered to be one of the top community colleges in the nation, SRJC has carved a path for reentry students looking for an AA degree or transferring to a 4-year university. Many students working full-time or have a family come here for the convenience and the price. At $36 a unit, this is the cheapest school on the list. The average overall age of the students at SRJC is 35. They have a reentry office and counselors prepared to work in depth with reentry students. Last academic year approximately 10,000 students and prospective students over 25 came to the Adult Reentry office to access these services. SRJC is known for having the best general education (math, English, science) classes to help students transfer. However, it is also has great nursing and culinary programs. Students can receive their AA degree in Administration of Justice, automotive technology, engineering, music plus many more. What separates SRJC from other schools is their weekend college. This is great for full-time working students, the jc will work around your schedule to fit the needs of students only able to take online classes or classes on Saturdays and Sundays. 2. California State University-Sonoma 1801 East Cotati Avenue Rohnert Park, CA 94928 Eighty-eight percent of Sonoma St's 7,483 students are over the age of 25. SSU offers 41 bachelor's degree programs and 14 master's degree programs. The student-faculty ratio at SSU is 23:1, and the school has 38.7 percent of its classes with fewer than 20 students. a number of student services including nonremedial tutoring, women's center, placement service, day care, and health services are offered on campus. The in-state tuition is $5,302 per year, many students qualify for grants and scholarships, and SSU offers grants just for reentry students. Forty percent of reentry students receive full scholarships to the school. If students transfer from a community college, the Cal-grant has a special grant up to $6,500 per year. SSU provides career placement and job services for current and graduating students, and puts on time management seminars for reentry students. Sonoma specializes in business majors. 3. California State University-Los Angeles 5151 State University Dr Los Angeles, CA 90032 Just like Sonoma, CSULA is a public calif. state school, and has the same $5,302 per year tuition. What sets this school apart from the others is the charter college of education. Many reentry students go here to receive their teacher credentials. The Charter College of Education at CSULA has received a $8.8 million grant from U.S. Dept. of Ed for the Los Angeles Urban Teacher Residency. Students go here if they are looking for a different type of degree, such as teaching credentials in moderate to severe child disabilities or teaching kids with autism. Not only are students eligible for grants through the state, but the Charter College of Education also provides scholarship opportunities. There are over 40 general scholarships available to be awarded to students in the program. Many classes can be taken online, or at nightime. These schools pride themselves on helping students over a certain age trying to finish their education. A couple tips to help reentry students along with their classes: -If money is an issue, consider a community college for the general education classes needed to graduate. Instead of $10,000, the first two years will cost about $2,100. Many community colleges give out the BOG fee waiver, which pays for each unit a semester. -Talk to a counselor on a regular basis. This will make sure the education path is clear, and the student will not get lost and stuck in school for six years. -Have fun. College is about learning and better oneself through education, but it is also a time for socializing and discovering. Scholarship opportunities: -Fill out the FAFSA every year, this leads the way to the Pell Grant and the Cal Grant. -Sign up for a free fastweb.com account, this site updates scholarship and grant opportunities daily. -Every school's website has a financial aid and scholarship office, so check often. |
