Nursing is a career that can touch not only the patient's life but your own. Only a few schools across the country specialize in nursing education. Some feature waiting lists to accomodate smaller class sizes for a better educational experience. All of these schools will require various prequisite courses be taken before you can begin the degree program. Keep this in mind when getting an idea of what your tuition costs will be. Watts School of Nursing in Durham, North Carolina began in 1895 as Watts Hospital. The school is affiliated with Duke University Health System. Programs just cover nursing and the school carries an accreditation from the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission. Prerequisite courses must be taken at any college before enrollment. Each year, two classes receive admission to the Watts program. On the job training occurs at Durham Regional Hospital as well as Duke University Hospital. Students that graduate receive a diploma from Watts in nursing and an Associate of Science Degree in Health diploma from Mount Olive College. St. Luke's School of Nursing in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania is part of St. Luke's Hospital and Health Network. Open in 1884, the school was only the fourth in the country to be started by a hospital. Full accreditation came in 1962 from the Nation League of Nursing. There are only 60 to 90 students that receive admission for each class. Some courses such as Microbiology are required prior to beginning the nursing program. Degrees in nursing are available and the Bachelor of Science degree is on hand for those students wishing to continue their education. The Bridgeport Hospital School of Nursing in Bridgeport, Connecticut has been in operation since 1884. At the time, this school was one of only 15 nursing schools in the United States. National League of Nursing gave the school full accreditation in 1952. There is a body of 250 students with 125 new student admitted each year. Diploma In Nursing, Surgical Technology and Sterile Processing Technician are the three program choices for students. It takes two years to finish the Diploma in Nursing program while Surgical Technology takes ten months and Sterile Processing Technician runs between three weeks to five weeks in length. Lutheran School of Nursing is affiliated with St. Alexius Hospital. Both are located in St. Louis, Missouri. The National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission as well as the Missouri State Board of Nursing provide the school's accreditation. Students must complete four courses, English Composition I, Introduction to Sociology, Introduction to Psychology, and Anatomy and Physiology I before admittance. The Registered Nurse program is 22 months of full time course work. Students in this program get about 16 hours of clinical work each week starting in their fifth week. There is also a program for Licensed Practical Nurses to become Registered Nurses that takes 15 months. The Los Angeles County College of Nursing and Allied Health campus is at Los Angles County and University of Southern California Medical Center. It began in 1895. Students get clinical experience at several locations such as the Department of Health Services or Olive View-UCLA Medical Center. Approval of the school comes from the California Board of Registered Nursing. An Associate in Science Degree In Nursing is available. The program to obtain the degree spans two years.
