Many Sullivan, Illinois residents decide to start off their college experience at a community college. They do this to save the thousands of dollars in tuition that it would cost to attend a university and take the same basic core classes. Coming from a smaller town, Sullivan residents like the smaller class sizes offered at a community college, where they will receive more one-on-one instruction to help better prepare them for university level course work. Three top area community colleges that residents attend are Lake Land Community College, Richland Community College and Heartland Community College. Lake Land Community College Located in Mattoon, Illinois, Lake Land Community College is the top college choice for Sullivan area residents. Lake Land's campus is only 19 miles from Sullivan, making it the closest college in the area. The number of full-time enrolled students at Lake Land College is around 3,666 students. Lake Land Community College offers a diverse amount of Associate in Arts Degrees, Associate in Science Degrees, an Associate in Engineering Science Degree and Technical Programs with one year certificates or two year degrees. A student that participates in a Transfer Program should be able to enter an Illinois university with a junior status. Lake Land does encourage students to consult with the college's counseling staff or the university they wish to transfer to since program requirements can differ from one university to another. The college's technical programs prepare graduates to immediately enter the workforce. Sullivan is in Moultrie County, and therefore residents are considered in-district residents by Lake Land Community College. In-district residents receive a reduced tuition rate of $67.50 per semester hour, compared to the $163 per hour rate for out of district residents. Out of state and international students pay $310 per semester hour. Sullivan residents attending Lake Land College can receive financial aid from federal, state and local sources. Lake Land requires all potential students looking for financial aid to submit a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), to determine their financial need. Lake Land College also has a variety of scholarships it awards to students who excel in academics, sports and areas of study. There is even a scholarship for students who have obtained a GED instead of finishing high school. The college also offers a work study program, where students in financial need work a job at the college to help pay for their tuition. Lake Land also has employment opportunities for students outside of the work-study program, such as in the cafeteria. Students can apply for student loans at Lake Land's Office of Financial Aid and Veteran's Services, located in the Student Center/Administration Building. Lake Land College has several articulation agreements with universities that allow a hassle-free transfer for some areas of study. These universities include; Eastern Illinois University, Indiana State University and Millikin College. Lake Land also has many 2+2 Technical Agreements, which allow a student to complete two years of coursework at Lake Land and two more years at the partner university to obtain a baccalaureate degree. These universities include; Eastern Illinois University, Illinois State University, Robert Morris College and Southern Illinois University. Lake Land College also has the fourth highest on line class enrollment in the state. The faculty has developed and taught over 150 classes over the Internet. On line coursework is convenient for students who cannot commit to a certain class time. Richland Community College Richland Community College is another community college choice for Sullivan, Illinois area residents. Located in nearby Decatur, Illinois, Richland offers the feel of a big city while still maintaining an affordable, accessible community college format. Enrolling about 7,600 students in its Decatur and satellite campuses, Richland Community College is a great choice for students looking for a more diverse urban experience without having to move to a large city. Richland Community College offers six Associate Degrees; Associate in Arts, Associate in Science, Associate in Fine Arts, Associate in Engineering Science, Associate in Arts in Teaching and Associate in Applied science. Instead of an Associate in Applied Science Degree, Richland students can opt to complete basic or advanced certificates in Career and Technical Education Programs. Moultrie County residents are considered in-district students, so Sullivan, Illinois residents can receive the reduced tuition rate of $83.00 per semester hour. This includes the academic and technology fee. Out of district residents are charged an additional $386.53 per semester hour. The out of state and international tuition is an added $501.86 per semester hour. Each student requesting state and federal financial aid at Richland Community College will need to fill out a FASFA for each academic year they plan to attend. In addition to the normal federal grants, such as the Pell Grant, students may apply for any of Richland's scholarships. Not all of these scholarships are are academically based, some are based on need and planned course of study. Richland College also offers scholarships and grants to military veterans. Work study programs are also available. Many Illinois institutions have signed a General Eduction Compact that states that any community college student earning an Associate in Arts or Science degree will allow them to enter a four year university having met all freshman and sophomore general education requirements. So students who earn a degree at Richland can expect full recognition from those universities. Richland College has Articulated 2+2 agreements with for year universities in a variety of majors. These universities include Benedictine University, DeVry University, Eastern Illinois University, Franklin University in Ohio, Greeneville College, Millikin University, Robert Morris College, Southern Illinois University in Carbondale and the University of Illinois in Springfield. Heartland Community College Located about 66 miles from Sullivan, Illinois, is Heartland Community College in Normal, Illinois. Heartland is a good community college choice for Sullivan area residents who want to actually experience moving a distance away from home. The student body is only made up of 2,390 students, offering a campus with the familiarity of a small town. Heartland Community College offers an Associate in arts Degree and an Associate in Science Degree. Heartland also has many certificate programs. These programs are focused in a number a specialties from accounting and business to electrical and welding. Sullivan, Illinois residents are not considered for in-district tuition unless they or their parent/guardian work within District 540 or if the student pays property taxes within the district. In district tuition is $88 per semester hour. Out of district tuition is $176 per semester hour and out of state/international tuition is $264 per semester hour. Heartland Community College students in need of financial aid will have to fill out and submit a FAFSA. Students at Heartland are eligible for federal and state aid, as well as work study programs. The college also has scholarships and student loans that can be applied for. Heartland also has a Federal Veterans Program to assist with veteran's tuition. Numerous agreements have been made between Heartland College and other universities for transfer credit. These institutions include the University of Illinois at Springfield, Franklin University and Milikin University. Heartland has nursing credit agreements with Lakeview College of Nursing, Mennonite College of Nursing and Methodist College of Nursing. These area community colleges for Sullivan, Illinois residents all have different experiences to offer potential students by their locations. Attending a community college can be a stepping stone to a seamless transfer into a four-year university, with the proper planning. And at under half the price, community colleges are hard to pass up. |
